Telefon & Internet

There are four mobile phone (cellphone) companies in Barcelona:

Telefonica Movistar

Orange and Vodafone are in general a bit cheaper than Telefonica. Yoigo is new and is offering a simpliefied tarif for all reds at all times. It’s worth buying a prepayed SIM card from one of the companies mentioned as soon as you arrive. You will see many offers to buy a mobile phones with prepayed SIM cards, but if you are here only for a year or less, it’s not recommended to get a contract. They aren’t much cheaper than the prepayed system. The only problem point is that it is a bit more complicated to get a contract.

You can buy these SIM cards at the specialised shops of the mentioned companies, or in shops dealing in mobile phones, and in the big department stores, like “El Corte Inglés”?.

To recharge the cards you can go to any “kiosk”? (eg. at the Ramblas) or any ATM bank terminal (if you have a spanish bank account, which is highly recommended).

Phone calls vary in price depending of the hour and of your prepayed settings. You always have to pay the first minute plus the connection fee. SMS within Spain are priced normally, except to foreign countries which are quite expensive.

Fixed phone / Calling to foreign countries

Installing a fixed phone from Telefonica is expensive and only worth it if you stay in your apartment for a while. If you only need to make international phone calls once in a while, then it may be better to use a calling card. You can buy them at internet cafes or at any “kiosk”. For 10 Euros you can call for about 2-3 hours to any European country from any public phone.

There are internet cafes at every corner in the city center. EasyInternet is one of the cheapest ones. But be aware of pickpockets!

Installing a ADSL line is very expensive (over 100 Euros). A monthly flatrate costs 30 Euros.
